In the fall of 2017, volunteers started planning educational field trips for local school children. In December of that year, a local private school attended our first field trip. It was on December 14, Alabama’s birthday. The Alabama Day field trip included students learning about Alabama’s statehood, a craft activity, games and so much fun.
In the spring of 2018, field trips have been planned for Transportation (2nd graders) and Civil War (4th or 5th graders). The Transportation field trip included students touring the Historic Train Depot, a presentation of the history of transportation including songs, a stagecoach and antique car presentation.
The Civil War field trip included an interactive presentation of uniforms, weaponry, and other artifacts of the life of a soldier, Civil War Era Music, a home front drama, Civil War Medicine, and 1860’s fashions and artifacts.
The West Alabama Heritage Learning Center is a place for local school children to have a place to learn about the heritage of West Alabama and to experience history with speakers, artifacts and hands on learning. We’re interested in helping bring History to Life!
