Genealogy sheets from the Lackey Stephens and the Carl Adams’ collections.

This collection of genealogical material is from the late Lackey Stephens and from Carl Adams’ collections. As of March 2017, Adams remains engaged in the study of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama history. These four hundred plus family and individual names are listed by the last name of the husband.

In addition to genealogical information, many sheets give interesting information of historic value such as occupation, land ownership, military service, killings, fights, lawsuits and bankruptcy. In the matter of bankruptcy,  the severe financial panic of 1837 in the United States resulted in bankruptcy for many of the merchants in Northport. A stellar exception was Charles Snow, the result of his business policy being based on “cash only.” Whiskey, legal and illegal, related killings were common.  Just a few illustrations are given.

In several instances, reference is made to “lot” numbers. A word of clarification is given. The land area that comprises downtown Northport lies in the southeast quarter of Section 16 Township 21 South Range 10 West (S 16 T 21 S R 10 W.) The first survey of the area was the Robert Cook/Job Goyne Survey of 1827-1828. However no sale of any Section 16 Land could be sold until 1833 when at last the Alabama Legislature got around to defining the manner by which such lands could be sold and the monies gained set aside for public education. The first purchase was by Charles Snow on January 12, 1833; he purchased lots 4 and 13. Lot 13 includes the land area that currently is the home of the West Alabama Heritage Learning Center (the corner southeast lot at the intersection of Main Avenue and 10th Street). On January 19, 1833, the next lots were sold by the state to James Christian (lots 7 and 9—the northwest and southwest corner lots at the intersection of 5th Street and Main Avenue. Lot 8 became 5th Street.)
